So you’re standing in a sex shop in front a row full of lubes. Problem is, there’s about five thousand different types of lube, and you have no idea which one is safe for your toys and right for you. BUT, have no fear. Here are some things to remember and keep in mind when looking at the different types of lube, and which ones are best for your toys.
Silicone Based Lubricants
- Silicone based lubricants should never be used with silicone toys. The molecules from the lube can bond with the molecules in the toy, which cause holes in the toy. This can prevent the toy from being able to be properly sterilized, leading to bacterial growth in your toys, which is never a good thing.
- Silicone lubes are like water based lubes, except for the fact that silicone lubes are water proof. If you have water safe toys, this is your best bet for safe water play.
- These lubes, since they are water proof, are a little harder to clean off of toys and yourself or a partner. Don’t fret though, a warm soapy solution should work in getting it all off.
- Silicone lubricants do not harm latex like other lubes do, so they’re perfect for use with condoms, either on toys themselves, or during intercourse.
- A little goes a long way when it comes to silicone because they retain their lubricating properties better then other lubes, so keep that in mind when you think you need a handful!
Water Based Lubricants
- Water based lubricants are highly versatile, so they can be used on virtually any type of toy.
- These types of lube do not stain and are easy to clean up, BUT, they can absorb into the skin and evaporate, so reapplication might be necessary.
- These are safe to use with latex toys and condoms.
- Because water based lubes are not water proof, they are not recommended for use with toys in the water. Water based lubes wash away very easily in water, so rather than providing a slick feeling, it can leave you dry and uncomfortable.
Petroleum Based Lubricants
- These lubricants should never be used with latex condoms, diaphragms, or cervical caps, as they can break down the materials in these products.
- Petroleum lubes are thicker than other lubricants, which makes them perfect for anal lubrication and easier penetration. However, they can irritate the vagina, so it’s best to leave petroleum lube out of intercourse and away from toys that lead to vaginal penetration.
- These lubes can leave stains in fabrics and are difficult to wash out.
Oil Based Lubricants
- These are a lot like petroleum based lubricants, but they are safe to use for vaginal penetration.
- They should not be used with latex products, such as condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, or any latex toys, as they break down the latex material.
- They are hard to wash off and can stain fabrics.
- These are wonderful for anal toys/sex as well as a great substitute for petroleum lubes with intercourse and masturbation.

Remember…
- When looking for a good lube for anal use, choose a lube that is made for anal play specifically, and then go from there when choosing between lube types, depending on the type of toy, environment, or partner(s) that you might have.
- Be careful when choosing flavored lubricants. Sugars and flavorings in these may not be 100% safe for the genital areas, especially the vagina.
- Play around with “special” lubes. Warming, cooling, tingling, arousing, ect. Different lubes cause different sensations and feelings, and finding the right one for you or your partner(s) is important.
- Using lube does not mean that you’re not into sex or not aroused. Don’t be afraid to bring up that you want to try it or use it with your partner(s), and if your partner brings it up to do, don’t feel threatened or upset that your partner wants to try some.
- Always ensure that the lube you’re using is safe for you, your partner(s) and your toys! Be aware of any ingredients that might cause allergic reactions or irritations.
- And lastly, have fun with it!
